Software · SARS · Tax Administration Act
SARS compliance software that checks your returns before you file.
Komply is not accounting software. You enter each VAT201, EMP201 and EMP501, and Komply tracks the due dates eFiling won't chase for you. On Pro it also scores each return's readiness, checks the documents behind it before it goes to SARS, and follows each refund through SARS's window.

- Businesses filing VAT201, EMP201, EMP501, IRP6 or ITR14 returns. With Xero (on Pro; a South African organisation in rand, filing monthly or every two months), Komply adds up the VAT201 figures daily from your invoices and transactions (invoice basis); every return can also be entered by hand.

Capabilities
What it does
- 01
On Pro
Readiness scoring, per return
VAT201 and EMP201 scored across five components, EMP501 across seven: the supplier-VAT-number gap you report, PAYE, UIF and payroll-movement anomalies, and IRP5 reconciliation gaps. Scored from the figures you enter, before the return is submitted, while there is still time to fix the inputs.
- 02
On Pro
Pre-filing checks on the documents behind a return
Before you file, Komply checks each Xero-synced VAT201 for what a SARS verification is likely to ask for and the Xero file can't yet show: zero-rated exports, import VAT and input VAT on documents with no attachment in Xero. It checks every certificate in an EMP501's e@syFile export too: UIF against its ceiling, SDL against 1% of the pay it shows, and PAYE against a range from SARS's tables.
- 03
On Pro
The 2026 TRN-rejection rule, caught early
IRP5 cross-validation, run on the IRP5 figures you enter, flags employees without a valid income tax number. From the 2026 filing season SARS does not accept an EMP501 that is missing one for a taxed employee, so you see it before you file, not when the reconciliation is refused.
- 04
Every return you add, on one list
VAT201, EMP201, EMP501, IRP6 provisional payments and ITR14 returns, each listed with its SARS due date. When you mark one submitted, Komply records the date you filed it and, if you add it, SARS's reference number. The digest on the 1st of each month shows what falls due in the next 30 days.
- 05
On Pro
VAT refunds, tracked against SARS's window
Each refund you record is tracked against SARS's 21-business-day service commitment, and matched to Xero bank deposits that reference SARS. Past the window, Komply shows the escalation path at 30, 60 and 90 days: follow up with SARS, complain to the SARS Complaints Management Office, then the Tax Ombud.
- 06
On Pro
Verification letters, answered on time
When SARS selects a return for verification, Komply counts down to the letter's due date in business days, sends reminders at 14, 7, 3 and 1 business days and on the day, and prints a cover sheet listing the document categories SARS asked for. For a Xero-synced VAT201, the evidence pack gathers the files attached in Xero to the period's documents and packs them into eFiling's limit of 20 files of 5 MB each; Komply does not open or check the files. Each return also has an evidence PDF and a read-only share link that lasts 30 days, for your accountant or auditor.
- 07
Penalty exposure, quantified
A calculator of what paying late costs: the 10% late-payment penalty (imposed under the Tax Administration Act at the rate each tax Act sets) plus interest at the prescribed rate, so the cost of slipping is a number, not a feeling.
- 08
SARS notices, read every week
Every week Komply reads SARS's news, public notices and Budget documents, and shows the relevant new ones to owners and admins on your SARS page, most with a short machine-written summary.

Questions
- 01
Does Komply file my returns with SARS?
No. You (or your accountant) file on eFiling as before. Komply tracks the deadline and, when you mark the return submitted, records the date you filed it and, if you add it, SARS's reference number. On Pro it also scores the return's readiness beforehand.
- 02
Do I need Xero to use the SARS module?
No. Every return can be entered by hand, and EMP201 and EMP501 score the same either way. A VAT201 entered by hand scores up to 70, because its 30 reconciliation points come only from Xero: how many of the period's payments and bank transactions Xero marks reconciled. With Xero (on Pro; a South African organisation in rand, filing monthly or every two months), Komply adds up the VAT201 figures daily from your invoices and transactions (invoice basis), reads the VAT numbers of the suppliers on the period's purchases for the evidence points, checks the period's documents before you file, and re-reads earlier periods to catch books changed after you filed. While a refund is open, it also checks your bank deposits for the SARS payment.
- 03
Does this replace my accountant?
No, and it isn't meant to. Your accountant owns the tax positions and the filing. Komply is the layer that tracks the deadlines and, on Pro, checks readiness between engagements. Most defects it flags are data problems in the figures you enter (a supplier-VAT-number gap, an IRP5 mismatch) that are cheap to fix early and expensive to fix after assessment.
